OW:L Espresso @ SS15

So yesterday we have just done a mid-term exam for one of the subjects, and thus to celebrate we decided to go to this hidden cafe called OW:L Espresso which is located at SS15, Subang Jaya, next to Inti College building. We picked this place because our friends have been strongly recommending it to us and so we thought just give it a go!

Upon arrival at the cafe, I was pretty amazed by it simply because I totally did not expect it to be such beautiful in terms of design. It is so vintage with all the wooden tables and chairs and checkered tiles on the floor. Hipster checked!

Despite their wide range of coffee menu, we were there for their bingsu. Bingsu is a kind of Korean dessert and the name itself basically means shaved ice. It is usually just plain shaved ice topped with different ingredients. Ever since Cafe Bene opened in Malaysia, bingsu has become such a hit in the industry and almost every cafe started putting it into their menu.

However, what really makes OW:L Espresso stands out from others is the ice that they use to make shave ice. OW:L Espresso uses milk flavoured shaved ice as the base for their bingsu and unlike other bingsu that I have tried before, their shaved ice is really much smoother, much milky and much creamy.

We ordered two flavours to share - Injeolmi and Mango Cheese.
Injeolmi is their signature and also the authentic flavour of bingsu in Korea. It is topped generously with yellow bean powder, red bean paste, chopped almond pieces and of course the star, injeolmi which is Korean rice cake (texture and taste are like Japanese mochi). The nuttiness of the yellow bean powder and the milk shaved ice are like match made in dessert heaven! So yums! Must try!

After Black @ Bandar Sunway

Yet another cafe in Sunway. What a surprise! No, not really. With so much activity around the Sunway University area, we can expect more cafes to open up. And maybe its good news for us. After all, having more choices as the consumer can only be good right? Well, the Hungry Squad certainly thinks so.
(Taken from: http://oh-my-vans.blogspot.my/2015/03/chapter-105-after-black-sunway-25.html)

You would expect great coffee from such cafes and After Black is certainly no exception. One of their best coffee arguably would be the Rose Latte, just like a normal latter, except flavoured with rose syrup and topped off with sprinkles of rose petals on it. Combined with a medium strength shot of espresso, the taste this coffee gives is sublime. I would say it is a must try for those who like flavoured coffee.

(Take from: http://my.openrice.com/klangvalley/photo/after-black-bandar-sunway/519491/rose-latte/426852)

Apart from their coffee, their food are definitely worth a shout. Their pasta set which allows you to choose a main dish and a pasta from RM8.90 to RM27.90 (depending on the main dish) is a good deal. The food served are fairly portioned and the taste is excellent as well.

The service staff are great too, warm and quick to serve the customers, the service here makes them yet another competitive outlet in this area.

So, what does the Hungry Squad has to say about this cafe? Our verdict, their coffee, food, atmosphere and service makes them a serious competitor against Garage 51. A definite must try within the Sunway Area.

Jibby & Co. @Empire Subang

There is another place for me to introduce you where you can have chilling, gathering and have meal with friends, family or siblings.  Jibby & Co is one of the famous and ravishing cafe in Subang.  It located at outside Empire Shopping Gallery.   The cafe looks big because there is two storey tall with glass ceiling, and sufficient sunlight when having meal in the morning or afternoon.

If you would like to visit this cafe, please come earlier to grab your table.  Or else, you will ended up queuing at outside for more than half an hour to been call.  Especially when weekend, there were a lot people craving for their brunch at this cafe.

Here is food and drink that I order:
  •  Soft Shell Crab Burger
  •  Casablanca Eggs
  • Surfin Pizza
  • Iced Crushed Lemonade
  • Flat White
  •  Mocha

From the dishes that I order, I could say I love the soft shell crab burger more than others.  It served on a wooden chopping board with sweet potato fries which feel different taste compare to others fries, asian coleslaw their unique spicy mayonnaise.  Overall taste is fantastic.  However, Jibby & Co menu prices are quite expensive.  The soft shell crab burger cost me RM32 but I think is worthy.  The crab was not too oily and the fries were crusty and addictive.  Cannot get enough of that, can I have more?

Follow by the Surfin Pizza at RM35.  This pizza comes with big portion so that you can share it with your friends.  It special served with the tiger prawns, blue mussels, quid, crab meat and wild wocket (type of salad leave).  Although Casablanca Eggs is most recommended by others on website and the waitress, but still prefer the Surfin Pizza and Soft Shell Crab Burger.

Casablanca Egg is kind of baked eggs with house-made chicken sausage, lemon zest, in Neapolitan tomato sauce and North African ras el hanout spices served with golden oiled baguette on the side.  You can eat this with the baguette they provided.  The price for this is RM28.

As for the drink, I could not found any special on it.  Apologize for that.  Most of the customers liked to celebrate their birthday at here because when at night, the lighting is super beautiful and seem romantic.  Overall, this cafe is little over-rated compared to others cafe yet the food is delicious and yummy.  I will try to dine-in for dinner in next visit.

Tipsy Brew O' Coffee @ Setia walk

Friday night, my friends and I went to Setia Walk have a cup of coffee and chit chat around.  Although we realised that Setia Walk does not have much cafe shop, but it is convenient for us because it had a lot of parking slot.  This could be one of the advantage for me to choose a place to visit.

So, we decided to visit Tipsy Brew O' Coffee.  Based on the review on internet, this cafe shop have  their uniqueness. What is mean their uniqueness?  They show the process on 3 different brewing method used to brew every single origin such as siphon, hand drip and French press.   I found interesting.  Besides that, the environment make people feel cosy and you can feel the aroma of coffee when step into the shop.  The place is dimly lit with slow and soft music playing.

Others than coffee, they also serve with other beverage option such as fruit juice, hot chocolate and tea.  This beverages are for the non-coffee drinkers.   Their simple menu show variety of food and beverages .  The explanation make people easy understand what food and beverage they are selling and the prices of each items.

Here's our order!!!

In the late night, I does not wish to order any food.  So I just order one cup of hot Caffe Mocho which cost me RM11.90.  The sugar level of this cup of mocha was perfectly adjusted, perfectly sweetened.    However, this consistent mocha was served in not too hot situation.  When I chatting with friends, it was easily get cold.

Ice cafe Latte @ RM11.90.  Regarding to the name, we can imagine it was just a cup of latte with ice.  Nevertheless,  it show up with a bottle of milk and 2 pieces of espresso chocolate inside a cup.  My friends and I feel special on this drink.  When my friend pour the milk into the cup with pieces of espresso chocolate, the piece of expresso chocolate melted slowly and the colour was changes to light brown.  The milk was served in cold but it still can melt the chocolate chip.  Fantastic.  If you are looking for a milky drink, this is typically the one to select.

The last order for us,  Shakerato.  This drink was recommended by the waitress. It is an espresso shaken with ice and served in small portion.  If you doest like any black coffee, this seem not the best choice for you although the taste not that heavy.

Tipsy Brew O' Coffee is a nice place to chill out alone or with friends as it has a relaxing and cosy atmosphere.  my friends and i was satisfied with thier services.  I think I will return to this coffee shop for my lunch or dinner because I haven try out their others food and dessert as well since the dessert are homemade while the cafe's signature food is Thai Laksa.

Magnum Cafe @ Mid Valley Megamall

Still remember the crazy crowds when Magnum Cafe first opened in Mid Valley? It was the first Magnum Cafe in Malaysia at that time so everyone went nuts about it. People can queue for hours just to try it and to me, that does not make sense. Spending hours queuing up just to get a fancier looking ice cream is crazy. Last week, it so happened that I passed by the cafe and there was no long crazy line like it used to be. So, my sister and I decided to try it out.

The interior design of the cafe gives a very fancy and luxurious feel. The operational area consists of a few sections to do different decorating jobs for the ice cream.

Only 3 simple steps to get your personalized Magnum ice cream done: coat, top and drizzle.

So many toppings to choose! 😍 hh

At the end, I got myself a Black Forest. It is a chocolate brownie flavour ice cream coated in dark chocolate, topped with oreo crumbles, frozen raspberries and pistachio, then drizzled with white chocolate, and finally finished up by putting a Magnum logo chocolate on top. Look at the final outcome and the presentation! How can ice cream be so beautiful?! Alright! Before it all melted, let's get into my belly baby! One bite with everything. The sweetness and cold from the ice cream, the bitterness from the dark chocolate coating, the crunchiness from the oreo crumbles, the nuttiness from the pistachios plus a little tartness from the frozen raspberries. For one moment, I thought I was in heaven. It was so yummy, all the ingredients just match so well with one another. I think I am in love with Magnum ice cream now. Yes, it is fancy but is super good too! GIVE ME MORE PLEASE! 😍

Map's @ Bandar Sunway

Located along a row of shop lots and a few minutes walk from Sunway Pyramid and University, Map's is one cafe that has been around in that area longer than other cafes which has only been opened recently. However, being located away from the "hot spot" which is the area around Sunway University and Monash, it tends to be a little quieter as compared to other cafes around that area.

(Taken from: http://www.eatdrink.my/kl/2014/07/19/review-maps-bandar-sunway/)
Previously known as The Latte Place in Ampang, it had to close down due to tenancy issues before reopening with a new name and a new location. Upon going through the front door, a homey feeling can be felt. Warm lighting, friendly staff, and a simple decor, its easy to get comfortable and feel right at home here.
(Taken from: https://subanggirleats.wordpress.com/tag/sunway-2/)
A huge calendar/planner filled with activities and motivational quotes can be noticed on the wall. One important thing to take note of here is they do serve several pork dishes, so Muslims might want to take that into consideration before entering. That being said, for those who absolutely adore pork, this is definitely the place.

(Taken from: http://www.eatdrink.my/kl/2014/07/19/review-maps-bandar-sunway/)
The slow braised pulled pork sandwich at RM18 might seem a little small but take nothing away from the taste. The pork is well seasoned and flavourful and blends well with the cheese. The roast potatoes on the side are decent as well.

(Taken from: https://www.facebook.com/maps.place)

Their coffee is decent despite the acidity which may have been cause by the beans. Overall, the strength and taste is above average and is reasonably priced at RM9. Other beverages which non coffee drinkers might want to try are their flavoured milks (RM8).

So what does the Hungry Squad has to say about Map's? In short, for people who like a lot of pork with their food and a quiet place to relax while sipping their cuppa, this would be the ideal place. Mix that with a warm and friendly service staff, this cafe is definitely worth a go.

DC Comics Super Heroes Cafe @ Sunway Putra Mall

Hey, have you been heard about the Super Heroes Cafe?  Yeah. There was the first outlet where open at Puteri Habour Johor.  However, there was great news for Klang Valley friends.  Here another second DC Comics Super Heroes Cafe outlet in Malaysia which located at second floor of Sunway Putra Mall.  If you are super heroes' fans, you can also purchase their merchandise such as shirt, baggage, cap and others.  For the Super Heroes Cafe, their shop decoration is using Batman and superman as their theme and we found interesting and surprise is when they served the food and drink, they are using the superman tumblers and batmen cup.  It was super cool.

Back to their food and beverage, I had ordered Batman Special and my sister ordered Batman vs Hawkman. We two share one drink which name call Batman Choc Toffee.  Every food and beverage has their own unique name.  Besides the menu items name, their food also bears the logos as you can see from the picture that I show.  Do you think sound cool? You may give a try on it.

Batman Special which cost me RM18.  The burger served with cheese, mayo and chicken sausage.  Sound simple? Yup, there were only one sausage and it split into half to make it look like two.  The ciabatta was soft enough but I could say it was quite pricey for one sausage yet the overall taste is quite good.  The burger also served with french fried as well.

Follow by Batman vs Hawkman.  The charcoal bread with egg and turkey roll which cost me RM 13.50.  I think this price still reasonable for me.  How was the taste of the burger? I could said that it just a normal burger, no special.  However, if choose to eat burger, I will prefer Burgerlab although their quite pricey.  Maybe one of their attractiveness is DC Comics Super Heroes Cafe special on their food which bears with the logo and the decoration of the shop.

"I am Batman Choc Toffee" which is the name of the beverage.  Their toffee instead of coffee and the name really sound cool when ordering them.  Besides, the cup also comes up with a long knights cape.  It is a cup of coffee which choc toffee, belgian choc chip, whip cream and choc sauce.  tthe choc toffee was rich and not too sweet for me.  The drink was pretty good but the price is a little expensive which cost RM18.

Besides selling burger, they also serve waffles and ice-cream.  Maybe I will try it in next visit.  Their unique decoration maybe is the worth thing that you can come and visit and have a try on their food and beverages.

Garage 51 @ Bandar Sunway

If you're a student at Sunway University, chances are you have stumbled or heard of this cafe. If you are not however, fear not. We, the Hungry Squad got it covered.
(Taken from: http://eleanordreamland.blogspot.my/2015_01_01_archive.html)
Located right across the university, it stands out among other shoplots and workshops with its colourful graffiti on the side. But, upon entering, it is a different story. Its name: Garage 51, is fairly unique. The Choong brothers (owners and certified baristas) came up with the name as the lot's number was 51 and it was previously a garage before being converted to a cafe.

White walls, light bulbs hanging from the ceiling, and wooden tables combine together to give the cafe a modern rustic look.

(Taken from: http://gogopixlibrary.com/bandar+sunway+cafe)
The baristas and servers are rather friendly and approachable as they greet customers who walk in with a warm smile and a sincere welcome.

The speed of service in this cafe is generally decent, but do expect your food or drinks to arrive a little slower during lunch hours.

That, and combined with their new lunch menu which is offered at only RM10nett from Tuesday to Friday, the lunch crowds can get a little out of hand at times.

Their menu ranges from brunch items such as Eggs Atlantic, croissants, smoked salmon on bagels, to desserts such as cakes and different items being offered after six such as pastas and even grilled lamb. One of their famous items on the menu would be their smoked salmon bagel. Their salmon are fresh consistently and the bagel goes well with it, at a cost of RM18.
(Taken from: http://jkdrooling.blogspot.my/2014/05/garage-51-by-coffee-societe-bandar.html)

As for their coffee, they are renowned for using the a special blend called "The Societe Blend". This blend is comprised of only the finest Arabica beans which originates from South and Central America along with some parts of Asia-Pacific. Combine this blend with medium roasting, their coffee produced are well balanced in terms of strength and acidity. One of their specialty is their "Mochatella", which are frozen ice cubes made from coffee, served with nutella and hot milk. The idea here is to let the hot milk melt the coffee cubes with the nutella and the resulting mixture is just exquisite, and it is reasonably priced at RM15.

To wrap it up, great coffee, relaxing atmosphere, friendly service and good food sums up what Garage 51 really is. Located across a university teeming with activity, Garage 51 shows other cafes what being a great cafe is all about.

Rekindle Cafe @ SS2

This day, I decided went a little distance from my house to have a hang out gathering with my ex-colleague-Emily Yap who works at SS2 bridal house.  It is more convenient for my friend to go there since after work already 9 o'clock at the night.  For me, every place also consider convenient for me because I like to drive the car to any place that I want.  Thus, we had chosen Rekindle Cafe as our meet up point.

Picture Credited by Bangsarbabe.com

Different cafes have their own and unique design to attract more customers.  Rekindle's uniqueness is on the mismatched furniture which mostly built up with the entire wooden and brick wall.  The environment make customer feel cosy and closer to the nature.  My friend and I sitting at an old styled sewing machines.  I was shock that the old sewing machine pedal under the table that we sat actually can press and moved.  Feel so special about it because normally those kind of table only for decoration purpose.

My friend and I had order a cup of latte and upside down.  After had been try out so many cafe shop,  i can not differentiate the taste of coffee.  It is because mostly all the latte almost have the same taste, just depend on the component of milks.  This latte cost RM10.  i consider as reasonable and market prices.

If you are a nutella lover, you can order this cup of coffee.  "Upside Down (RM15) is a coffee with nutella around the glass and scoop of ice-cream.  I not pretty know much about this cup of coffee taste.  I cannot give much comment on this.  Apologize for it.

The night is still young.  My friend and I chat until 11.30p.m then we decided to back home.  As a conclusion for this, Rekindle is a homey cafe and if you would like to take picture, you can come over here.  It is a great place to hang out.  That's all for today.
